When to use a Tv Aerial Booster in your Home?
On many occasions when visiting customers as an Aerial Installation Engineer I come across TV Aerial Systems set up to use a Amplifier to help with boosting the signal. These Aerial Boosters come in all shapes and sizes and a designed to help increase the reception signal of a terrestrial TV signal in areas when the signal reception is low or poor quality. The amp is powered either remotely or directly from a power supply in the home or business. The directly powered amps or 'set back amplifier' is plugged directly into a socket either in the loft or usually behind the TV set in the living room. These amps come in different sizes of outputs from 2 to 12 outputs.
The other type of booster is a 'masthead amplifier' and these pieces if kit are remotely powered. these are powered with a separate power supply plugged in usually behind a TV set and by using the coax aerial cable it sends the 12v power up the cable to the other half of the amplifier which is located at the base of the Aerial Mast. Again these can be supplied with 2-8 outputs depending on the needs of the household.
However good these digital aerial boosters are, there are limitations to its ability. For instance, if the signal coming in is compromised by interference, then this will not resolve the issue, because the amplifier will increase both the TV Signal and the interference together and it cannot distinguish them from each other. The way to resolve this reception problem is to somehow receive a clean signal from the aerial head itself and then to boost the signal from that stage. To do this an Aerial Fitter using a spectrum anylizer would be needed. Once a clear reception is being received from the digital TV aerial then even if the signal is weak, it can increased using either of the types of amp mentioned.
