North Face," Music Box Films Home Entertainment, 121 minutes, Not rated — Set in 1936 and based on a true story, the film details the exploits of Toni Kurz (Benno Furmann) and Andi Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas) to scale the Eiger, perhaps the most dangerous mountain in the Swiss Alps. The film is set against the background of the approaching Berlin Olympics and Hitler’s challenge to the alpiners of his country. It’s an incredibly powerful film that juxtaposes the travails of the climbers with the comfortable existence of the spectators at the lodge below as it details how a desire for glory soon morphs into a desperate struggle for survival.

The characters are awful. I would go so far as to say that there are no characters, just people with names. They do not grow or have anything in their history to press them forward. Jack is shown in a prologue to be obsessed with a beanstalk/giant myth and has a youthful desire to be a knight. But I’m convinced that this minor backstory was added after completion of the film. When Jack is older and is given the beans and told that they are ancient, magical beans, he has no friggin’ clue what he’s holding.
Several men are working at am archaeological site in Asia (nowhere in particular in Asia, just “Asia”), when an Earthquake in the region reveals strange artifacts and ruins that seem to suggest a hidden race of people. After getting trapped below the earth, the men come across an albino-skinned race of people, whose eyes have adapted to the low light of the inner-world, and who have enslaved a race of strange creatures that can burrow under the ground. The archaeologists find that their flashlights make the ‘mole people’ see them as gods.
